I believe Dufy wanted to show that with every thing this leader had been through, he still could recognize even traces of humanity. He was so accustomed to shooting zombies, why wasn't Andy just another one. Did Andy know about the civilization where he might get help? And Steve, he immediately noticed the difference, right. **SPOILER**I really liked the way the author brought those characters (at the end) together. He got through those and right back to the main story. He had a lot of little stories left that he obviously wanted to include in this novel. The author plunged right into this last story. Some series, especially zombie books, seem to never end. I like the way there was a story to tell with an ending. I was so glad to see this come to an end.
